"notes": "Rothmann and Mayer (Monatsschrift für Kriminologie und Strafrechtsreform, 2024) describe the project 'Künstliche Intelligenz im Strafvollzug' (KIIS), which ran from April 2022 to March 2023 with TU Wien Computer Vision Lab, CogVis, PKE Holding AG and the Research Institute - Digital Human Rights Center, funded under the KIRAS security research programme, with the Federal Ministry of Justice as end-user. Compact camera units combining RGB, thermal and depth imaging with on-board processing were installed for 25 days in each of two recreation rooms ('Freizeiträume') in one prison, and in a second prison two units were used for 30 days in a work area including a smoking room, together with smartwatches worn by volunteer prisoners recording position, pulse, temperature and acceleration. The aim was early detection of violence, suicide attempts and medical emergencies. The authors describe the system as at technology readiness level 4 of 9 with technical feasibility not yet proven, and report detection rates of about 80 per cent. The same paper mentions an earlier 2018 cell-sensor test for suicide prevention over 81 days in a Lower Austrian prison and a 2021 machine-learning project on movement patterns using data from two prisons. The article describes pilots only and no system in regular operation; the prisons are not named. The status is recorded as discontinued because the pilot period ended in March 2023; no later use was found.",
