"notes": "The Justice Department Inspector General's audit of the DEA's and FBI's efforts to integrate artificial intelligence and other emerging technology within the US Intelligence Community (report 25-014, December 2024) says that the DEA's Office of National Security Intelligence \"currently utilizes one AI tool that triages and summarizes open-source foreign reporting\", developed and vetted by an Intelligence Community element outside the DEA and the Justice Department. The Office told the Inspector General it had no plans to develop or acquire its own AI capabilities. The report says the Office reviews thousands of investigative reports and produces about 800 intelligence work products each month by unautomated processes, that earlier attempts to automate them were unsuccessful because the DEA prioritised enterprise-wide solutions, and that the Inspector General sees this as a likely opportunity for AI. It also records that the wider DEA was piloting a generative AI tool built on large language models. The report names no vendors or products and does not say whether the triage tool is generative. Uses within the Intelligence Community are excluded from the public federal AI use case inventory.",
