"notes": "The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) uses DIAS (Dialektidentifizierungsassistent) to analyse a recording of an asylum applicant's speech and indicate the likely language or dialect, as one aid to establishing the applicant's country or region of origin. In its answer to a question from Die Linke (Drucksache 20/9419, reported by the Bundestag's hib service on 27 November 2023), the federal government said the result goes into the case file to help decision-makers ask targeted questions about origin at the hearing, and is \"ein Hinweis unter vielen\" (one indication among many). It is usually run when an application is lodged at a BAMF branch office. The government gave 29,632 uses in 2022 and 22,947 in the first half of 2023; the result supported the applicant's stated origin in 78% of cases in 2022 and 81% in the first half of 2023.\n\nAn article by Juliane Beck in Verfassungsblog (22 June 2026) describes DIAS as in use since 2017, based on licensed third-party software that it names in a footnote as Nuance Speech Suite, developed with Atos, and used under section 16(1) of the Asylum Act. The article says the BAMF cannot state precisely how the result is weighed in decisions, and that an external evaluation by TH Nürnberg carried out in 2024 has not yet been published.\n\nNo technology page fits this system yet; see the editor's open decision on a page for language-processing tools.",
