Artificial intelligence now accounts for more than half of all reported cybercrime in Africa, Interpol has warned. The organisation said AI-driven scams helped push African digital crime losses from $192m in 2024 to $484m last year. Almost three-quarters of participating countries reported hosting scam centres, with victims frequently located in Europe and North America. Interpol based its African Cyberthreat Assessment Report 2026 on data from 36 member countries on the continent. Despite the surge, Neal Jetton, director of Interpol's cybercrime unit, expressed optimism about possible progress.
