Researchers Warn of AI-Enhanced Phone Fraud Ecosystem

Reported by Infosecurity Magazine

Artificial intelligence is lowering barriers for criminals to buy ready-made scam phone farms and carry out fraud, researchers have warned. Security firm Human Security bought and reverse engineered a kit to study how the technology enables romance scams, investment fraud, and account takeovers. The report warned that hardware, orchestration software, and cloud phones now snap together easily to let casual actors set up operations. Figures from the FBI cited in the report show romance fraud alone cost victims nearly $930m last year.
