Knightscope builds wheeled autonomous security robots that patrol a fixed site continuously, recording and alerting rather than intervening. They are not police equipment in the ordinary sense: the company's customers are mostly private, and the police deployments that exist are typically a force or city placing a unit in a park, car park or campus. The robots are unarmed and have no power to detain.
The company was founded in 2013 by William Santana Li, a former automotive executive, and Stacy Dean Stephens, a former police sergeant, explicitly in response to mass-casualty events. Its flagship K5 is roughly five feet tall, weighs around 400lb, and carries 360-degree cameras, licence plate recognition, thermal imaging and acoustic sensors.
HOW THE COMPANY DESCRIBES IT
Knightscope's own framing is built around evidence of work performed. Its marketing states that physical security "has run on the honor system for thirty years" — you paid for patrols and hoped they happened — and positions the robots as producing an auditable record instead: every patrol logged, every sensor check timestamped, every action exportable. The company summarises its own pitch as trading on receipts rather than logos.
Operationally the robots are sold as a subscription rather than a purchase, bundling hardware, site assessment, installation, maintenance and access to the browser-based Knightscope Security Operations Center (KSOC), through which operators issue commands, view camera and acoustic feeds, and monitor position. Company material describes the K5 as running continuously without teleoperation. A remote human layer sits above the machines, with analysts verifying incidents and coordinating response.
The stated purpose is deterrence and documentation, not force. Executives have described the aim as granting "superpowers" to human officers by extending situational awareness across an area without requiring a person to be present, and taking over monotonous work.
WHERE IT IS DEPLOYED
Deployments recorded on this site's tracker are listed below. The most-cited police example is Huntington Park, California, which was Knightscope's first police department client and whose chief subsequently promoted the experience to other agencies, directly influencing at least one further deployment. Beyond policing, units operate at retail sites, hospital campuses, casinos, utility sites and residential communities.
Proof News, in an August 2026 investigation, found evidence of at least 21 security robot deployments across the sector since 2015 — a useful corrective to the impression of ubiquity that marketing can create.
THE CASE FOR IT
The cost argument is real. Continuous physical presence is expensive, and a machine that patrols around the clock without shift patterns addresses a genuine constraint for any organisation trying to cover a large outdoor area cheaply.
The documentation argument is arguably stronger than the deterrence one. A patrol that logs itself produces an audit trail that a human patrol generally does not, and the eye-level timestamped footage has been credited with helping police identify suspects after the fact.
Huntington Park published before-and-after figures for its park deployment. Comparing June to December 2018, with no robot, against the same period in 2019 with the K5 operational, the department recorded a 46% reduction in crime reports, a 10% reduction in calls for service, a 68% reduction in citations and a 27% increase in arrests. These numbers are genuinely from a police department rather than invented by the vendor, though they were published through Knightscope's press channel.
THE CASE AGAINST
The Huntington Park figures should be read with care. They are a simple before-and-after comparison of one location over two seven-month windows, with no control site, no adjustment for wider crime trends, and no separation of the robot's effect from any other change in policing that park. A 68% fall in citations alongside a 27% rise in arrests is not an obviously coherent picture, and the department's own conclusion was that the robot was "having a positive impact" rather than a measured effect size.
Independent findings are considerably less flattering. Proof News reported a trail of cancelled contracts and companies rethinking the model, in some cases pivoting back to human guards. It cited one city whose robot patrolled a downtown park, failed to identify any criminal incidents, and produced no tickets or arrests; the city stated it "did not fully meet our operational needs."
The clearest limitation is that these machines cannot act. A robot that detects and reports but cannot intervene depends entirely on a human response arriving, and the gap between the two is where the technology's most publicised failure occurred: in Huntington Park, a bystander attempting to summon help for an assault reported being unable to get a useful response from the machine. Whatever the specifics, it illustrates a design reality that marketing language about autonomous security forces tends to obscure.
There is also an alert-quality problem. A system that generates frequent alerts without reliable fidelity increases workload rather than reducing it, which is the opposite of the force-multiplier claim, and is one reason cited for customers reverting to fixed cameras and human guards.
Finally, the surveillance question. Licence plate recognition and continuous 360-degree recording in a public park is a materially different proposition from the same sensors on private property, and the public consultation preceding these deployments is often minimal because the unit is procured as security equipment rather than as a surveillance system.
WHAT IS NOT ESTABLISHED
No independent evaluation of Knightscope's deterrent effect has been identified. The Huntington Park figures are the most substantial published data and they are uncontrolled.
Retention and access rules for footage and plate reads captured by units patrolling public space are not documented in any deployment reviewed, nor is whether that data is shared with police as a matter of routine or on request.
The current scale of police-specific deployment is unclear. Company material emphasises nationwide presence across all sectors; the number of active law enforcement clients specifically is not published, and the Proof News figure of 21 sector-wide deployments since 2015 suggests the policing subset is small.
Whether the recorded crime reductions persist, or decay as novelty wears off, is unaddressed by any source reviewed.
