MT Maltese law enforcement authorities Remote Biometric Identification (proposed) Proposed
- Legal basis
- None yet; described as preliminary discussion
- Oversight
- Malta's Data Protection Authority, which is the source recording these discussions
Recorded with low confidence deliberately. Malta's Data Protection Authority states law enforcement authorities began preliminary discussions in 2025 about deploying remote biometric identification at an airport. This is an early-stage exploratory discussion, not a confirmed system, procurement, or trial, and should not be read as evidence anything has actually been deployed. Sourcing status, checked August 2026: no citable public document beyond the data protection authority's own reference to preliminary discussions was located during a dedicated search. No procurement notice, tender, vendor, trial, ministerial statement or parliamentary record was found. That absence is itself the accurate position and is recorded here rather than papered over with a link to secondary coverage that would only restate the same single underlying claim. This entry should continue to be read as an early-stage discussion on the public record, not as evidence that Malta has deployed or is close to deploying any biometric identification system.
