Notes

Digitally scans the contents of mobile phones seized from prisoners and applies AI language analysis to flag code words and messages indicating violence, escape plans or contraband smuggling for staff action. Trialled across the prison estate, having analysed over 8.6 million messages at the point of announcement in July 2025.

Announced alongside a separate AI violence predictor, described as analysing factors including a prisoner's age and previous involvement in violent incidents in custody to predict individual risk and assess threat levels on wings. That second tool is recorded here as announced rather than deployed: the announcement does not state it has been trialled, and no deployment evidence has been found.

Both rest on a single official source.
