Notes
In a written answer of 11 December 2024 to parliamentary question no. 1587 (Dan Biancalana and Ben Polidori, 27 November 2024), Interior Minister Léon Gloden said, in Luxembourgish, that a limited number of paid AI licences are currently used in translation and number plate recognition, and that this AI is used, for example, in a scan app installed on officers' service phones that lets them check a car's plate during a traffic stop. The answer also says the police are working with Europol on an internal chatbot that can be used for translation, and that security, reliability and data protection are the first priority. It names no vendor or start date and cites no specific legal basis. Separately, the government's bill no. 8584, filed on 18 July 2025 to introduce an automatic number plate recognition system, states that Luxembourg is among the EU states that have not yet implemented ANPR; the bill does not mention the smartphone app. Luxtoday reported the answer on 12 December 2024.
