Notes
On a non-EU traveller's first entry and exit the system electronically registers passport data plus biometrics, specifically a facial image and fingerprints, with entry and exit records. On subsequent crossings it performs fast biometric verification. It replaces manual passport stamping and covers short stays of 90 days in any 180.
Became operational on 12 October 2025 with a six-month progressive rollout, and fully operational from 10 April 2026 at all external Schengen crossing points except Cyprus and Ireland.
This is among the largest-scale biometric systems in this catalogue, and differs from investigative facial recognition in that it verifies an asserted identity against government-held documents rather than searching to name an unknown person.
Recorded for eu-LISA, which operates the central system. National border authorities that use it can be added one by one.
