While supporters argue that the technology helps solve crimes and recover vehicles, opponents maintain that collecting location data on passing motorists creates a mass surveillance system open to abuse. In Troy, a city council meeting extended past midnight as residents criticised local officials for deploying cameras supplied by Flock Safety. A senior policy counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union stated that such mass surveillance technology should strictly be limited to investigating the worst possible crimes.
