Artificial intelligence surveillance technology, including licence plate readers, car trackers, and police drones, is rapidly expanding across American roads to track drivers and build detailed movement profiles. Data collected by companies such as Flock Safety, which operates across 49 states, is accessible to thousands of law enforcement agencies, including federal immigration enforcement. State legislatures are writing rules to govern how these systems can be used to protect driver privacy. Chad Marlow, senior policy counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union, warned that other licence plate reader providers such as Axon and Motorola also present serious privacy risks.
