Atlanta-based technology firm Flock Safety has expanded its network of AI-powered automated licence plate readers, which now log approximately 20 billion vehicle scans each month for police departments, neighbourhood groups, and private organisations. The system captures detailed information beyond plate numbers, including a vehicle's make, model, colour, and distinguishing features such as bumper stickers or gun racks. Law enforcement officers use the cloud-based data as a pattern-matching tool to search descriptive terms or partial plates, set alerts, and track movements across jurisdictions. Flock states that its cameras do not use facial recognition technology and that captured images are deleted after about 30 days by default. Chief Executive Officer Garrett Langley reported that the camera network contributed to roughly one million arrests over the past year.
