Stockton police roll out AI-powered body cameras that translate over 50 languages in real time

Stockton Police Department has rolled out artificial intelligence-powered body cameras capable of translating conversations in real time across more than 50 languages. More than 300 sworn officers in the Californian city have received the Axon devices, making it one of the first major forces in the state to deploy the technology department-wide. Police Chief Stanley McFadden said the tool was introduced to serve a diverse community where nearly half of residents speak a language other than English at home. The force hopes the live translation will remove language barriers during emergency calls and investigations when waiting for a human interpreter is impractical.
