AI X-ray Cargo and Vehicle Inspection

Neural-network analysis of X-ray scans of lorries, rail wagons and containers to flag goods that may be smuggled.

7 tracker records in 2 countries: 4 in use, 0 withdrawn, 3 on the horizon

Customs administrations scan lorries, rail wagons and containers with large fixed or mobile X-ray equipment. Some run the resulting images through neural networks trained to recognise classes of goods, so that officers are pointed to loads that may hold smuggled goods before deciding whether to inspect them physically.

The tracker records bodies that report using this kind of analysis in border and customs enforcement. It is distinct from AI weapons detection screening, which scans people walking through a portal: these systems analyse images of vehicles and the goods they carry.

In Poland the Ministry of Finance told the Sejm in 2025 that the customs system OKO-RTG uses convolutional neural networks on X-ray images from road and rail transport to flag possible smuggling of tobacco products, and that the system does not process citizens' data.
