Notes

The department announced on 13 February 2025 that it would pilot ScanTech's Sentinel CT scanner at its Centralized Mail Distribution Center for six months, with the scanner loaned at no cost and no obligation to buy. The release says the scanner uses AI to help operators spot small amounts of contraband, with custom algorithms designed to improve over time. ScanTech said on 22 October 2025 that it had delivered a Sentinel scanner to the department for a pilot to develop a customised contraband detection algorithm, without saying the pilot had started or finished. No source read shows the scanner in operation or reports results. VPM reported on 16 October 2026 that a study of state agencies' AI use by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) gives as an example the department's use of AI to identify potential security threats, including reviewing scanned images of bags brought into prisons; the article does not name the system or say whether it is the ScanTech scanner, which was to be used on mail.
