Notes

The Latvian State Police announced on 28 October 2026 that it is carrying out project VP/IDF/2026/1, titled in translation 'Effective latest artificial intelligence technologies and new tools for combating organised crime, child sexual abuse, the distribution of child sexual abuse material, and terrorism in the Baltic region', from 1 March 2026 to 30 September 2027. It says the aim is to develop a set of digital tools able to process and analyse large volumes of digital data for intelligence and investigation work, drawing on open and closed data sources in the most widely spoken languages of the Baltic region, to test the new tools and to buy high-performance servers; an international Baltic seminar on the use of AI in law enforcement is also planned. The State Police is responsible for carrying out the project, with the University of Latvia as cooperation partner, and is represented by the Cybercrime Combating Unit of its Main Criminal Police Department. Estonia is represented by the Cybercrime Bureau of the National Criminal Police of the Police and Border Guard Board and Lithuania by the Criminal Police Bureau of the Lithuanian Police, and law enforcement and AI experts from the three countries take part. The budget is EUR 1,010,256, of which EUR 757,692 comes from the EU Internal Security Fund and EUR 252,564 from the state budget. The release does not name a supplier or a specific AI technique and does not say when or whether the tools will be used operationally.
