Notes
The Oxford Institute of Technology and Justice's AI Justice Atlas profile of Latvia (information as at July 2026) states that the Latvian police use a technological platform, built by the Ministry of the Interior's Information Centre with the State Police and the road manager Latvijas valsts ceļi, to recognise and store vehicle registration plates for public order, investigative or search purposes, and that it entered into operation on 31 March 2026. The profile cites an Information Centre announcement headed 'Uzsākta tehnoloģiskās platformas transportlīdzekļu valsts numura zīmju atpazīšanai un uzkrāšanai darbība' (operation of the technological platform for recognising and storing vehicle number plates has begun). The project was approved by Cabinet Order No. 524 of 15 August 2023; the Ministry of the Interior said on 18 August 2023 that the platform would record plates with location, time and photo, compare them with lists and report matches, initially at about 100 locations. Cabinet Order No. 159 of 24 March 2026 amended the project plans, which provide for connecting 100 cameras in total, set the first quarter of 2026 as the deadline for putting the platform into production, budget maintenance from 1 June 2026, and state that the service is mainly for the State Police, with the State Border Guard and other users in future, and is not planned to be public. The plans say the service runs on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. No supplier of the cameras or recognition software is named, and the sources do not give a retention period or the legal basis for the processing.
