Notes

Swedish Customs' page on personal data in camera surveillance (last updated 26 January 2026) states that its camera surveillance involves automatic reading of the registration numbers of passing vehicles, known as ANPR, at a number of locations in the country with both fixed and mobile camera solutions. Plates are checked against the Customs database and officers are alerted to hits; the page says no material from the camera surveillance is saved. The stated purpose is to prevent, detect, investigate and prosecute crime and to carry out controls, concerning the illegal import and export of goods. The page does not list the locations or say when use began. The Swedish Police Authority, which administers the EU Internal Security Fund in Sweden, lists in its direction decision ('inriktningsbeslut') for the fund in 2026 an application from Swedish Customs for a 'supplementary purchase of ANPR cameras at border crossings where the technology is lacking', for more effective control of entry and exit, with EU support of SEK 5,250,000 (75 per cent) of a total of SEK 7,000,000. That document gives no dates or supplier. In a written question in the Riksdag of 13 June 2019 (2018/19:759), Anders Hansson (M) said that Customs had installed ANPR cameras but could not use them after objections from the Data Inspection Board, with an appeal pending; that is the questioner's account. No supplier is named.
