The Town of Taos Council has voted to remove $54,000 from the local police budget, ending a contract for 18 AI surveillance cameras. Operated by technology firm Flock Safety, the system uses automatic licence plate recognition to track vehicles entering and exiting the municipality. The police department had installed the cameras on main roadways in 2024. Councillors revoked the funding following growing community opposition over privacy rights and concerns about the misuse of data.
