Flock surveillance cameras are watching Columbus. Here's what to know

Columbus City Council is holding a public hearing on 10 August to discuss the use of Flock Safety surveillance cameras. The Columbus Division of Police uses Flock's Falcon automated licence plate readers, which are roadside cameras that log number plates, vehicle colours and bumper stickers into a searchable database. The council appears divided over the system, while police favour it and privacy advocates oppose it. Flock says the cameras do not use facial recognition, connect to motor vehicle bureau data, or specifically track vehicles, though police can use the recorded times and locations to do so.
