The Home Office has formally launched PoliceAI, a national centre provided with £75 million over three years to scale up the use of artificial intelligence across police forces in England and Wales. Funded as part of a broader £140 million AI investment through to 2028–29, the centre will initially run pilots in up to 10 areas to help officers triage, disclose, and summarise digital evidence. Practices proven successful in these trials are scheduled to expand to all forces in 2027, with the Home Office projecting that artificial intelligence will free up millions of police hours every year. Next phases will build on tools like audio-visual file redaction, following previous trials where reviewing 800 hours of kidnapping case footage took three hours and instantly translating half a million e-books of data led to the arrest of a serious organised crime gang.
