A woman surnamed Dong in Shehong county, Sichuan province, has received an administrative punishment after local police discovered she used an artificial intelligence tool to publish fake news. Police uncovered a fabricated post on Toutiao, a content platform owned by ByteDance, claiming an intoxicated man had attacked bystanders with a knife near a pedestrian street. The story, generated using ByteDance's Doubao large language model, attracted public attention and caused panic before an investigation confirmed no such incident occurred. According to police, Dong mass-produced sensational stories using AI tools for improper gains after joining online writing groups to monetise web traffic. She recklessly published the fabricated material under the belief that AI-generated content was truthful and that using these tools would not result in punishment.
