WA police drop AI seatbelt fines amid influx of complaints

Police in Western Australia have dropped hundreds of seatbelt fines generated by AI-assisted road cameras. Officers dismissed the penalties because they could not prove drivers knew their passengers were wearing seatbelts incorrectly. Commissioner Col Blanch said prosecutors withdrew the cases after hearing reasonable defences, though he warned people could not simply invent stories to avoid penalties. The state's Department of Transport rolled out the safety cameras in October last year, leading to more than 81,000 seatbelt fines. About 5,700 infringements, or roughly 7 per cent of the total, have now been overturned after drivers asked for reviews.
