Notes
The DHS 2025 AI Use Case Inventory (entry DHS-133, as consolidated by the Office of Management and Budget) lists 'Walk-Through Metal Detector (WTMD) Alternative Automated Target Recognition (ATR) Developments' as pre-deployment, with no operational date, and classes it as high-impact. The entry says AI-enhanced millimetre-wave detectors would be used instead of walk-through metal detectors at the security checkpoint to detect both metallic and non-metallic threats and prohibited items on passengers, sending target coordinates to the operator's station, where they appear as a bounding box on a representative human figure. Planned automated target recognition improvements for TSA's existing advanced imaging scanners (DHS-131) are recorded with the deployed Low Probability of False Alarm algorithm.
