Notes
The New York City Office of Technology and Innovation's algorithmic tools report for 2024 lists Patternizr as one of four tools reported by the NYPD. It describes the tool as comparing features of crimes to find similar complaints that may belong to a crime pattern: 'Analysts will look at the candidate crimes and suggest the formation of crime patterns', and says a human must evaluate the output. The report gives the first use as December 2016, lists no vendor and records an update in 2024 for routine maintenance. The tool finds links between recorded complaints and is not described in the report as predicting where crime will occur. At the City Council Committee on Public Safety hearing on 19 February 2025, according to an automated transcript on citymeetings.nyc, Deputy Commissioner Michael Gerber said the three tools the NYPD reports on annually are Patternizr, ShotSpotter and facial recognition, that 'these are technologies that use AI in some form', and that 'This is not AI predictive policing'.
