Notes
In its response to freedom of information request FOI/16629, published on 4 February 2026 and titled "Use of Artificial Intelligence", the Police Service of Northern Ireland lists a voice-to-text tool in use for the transcription of audio files such as interviews, and says staff who use it have been trained on it. An earlier response (FOI/14984, 3 September 2025) said the force's AI project was "in a conceptual phase" and that "AI usage in its most basic sense is limited to transcription of interviews". The February 2026 response also says the force does not use AI or algorithmic systems to support decisions and has no current plans to do so, and that there has been no service-wide AI training because its use of AI is at an early stage. In a further response (FOI/16730, 3 February 2026) the force said it does not use AI to transcribe witness statements. The responses do not name the tool or supplier, or say when use began. The February 2026 response also lists a video transcription tool for virtual officer attendance calls, which is not recorded separately.
