Notes
Adopted Hyper for non-emergency calls, as reported in February 2026. The police chief's claim that dispatch staffing fell by 66% is his own figure and is not verified.
Update, November 2026. The Santa Maria Sun reported on 12 February 2026 that the department began using Hyper on 10 February 2026 for calls to its non-emergency business line; 911 calls are still answered by a human dispatcher, the voice-based software works in multiple languages, handles minor incidents such as petty theft, parking, fireworks and loitering, and should hand off to a human if uncertain or if a caller is distressed. Hyper's chief operating officer said Lompoc was the first Central Coast agency to use it. That article does not contain the chief's 66 per cent staffing claim mentioned above, and gives no cost or council approval.
