Notes
WKBW reported on 6 December 2024 that Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia wanted to buy Dataminr, which the station describes as a technology tool 'that uses artificial intelligence' to scour social media and the dark net for crimes in progress or being planned; Gramaglia said it searches only open-source material and that a state technology grant would cover the cost. WGRZ, on an undated page, reported that the council's Finance Committee approved a two-year contract worth $82,800 paid for by a New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services technology grant, and quoted Gramaglia: 'We're not big brother in the fact that we're trying to get into what is password protected'. WKBW reported on 31 December 2024 that the Common Council had given approval for the department to enter into a contract with Dataminr, among several new technologies. No source read shows that the contract was signed or that the tool is in use, so the record is proposed.
