Notes
A National Police Chiefs' Council release of 25 September 2026 says Citizen Assist went live in Cambridgeshire on Thursday 24 September 2026 as a pilot. It lets people report non-emergency crime through a conversation with an AI tool instead of online forms or 101 calls: the tool asks follow-up questions, builds a structured report and submits it into existing police systems, and the user reviews the report before submitting it and receives a reference number. The pilot initially covers assaults, threats, damage and theft, and wider availability depends on its outcome. The release says the tool was developed by the NPCC's Digital Public Contact programme and names no supplier; it says the tool is meant to support, not replace, police decision-making and that existing reporting routes remain open. It names Cambridgeshire as the only force. Chief Constable Simon Megicks, Police and Crime Commissioner Darryl Preston and Alex Murray of PoliceAI are quoted.
