Notes
The Justice Department's 2025 AI use case inventory (entry DOJ-0136, as consolidated by the Office of Management and Budget) lists an FBI use case called "TIPS" as deployed, with an operational date of September 2025, built through contracting and in-house work and classed as classical machine learning. The entry says it is meant "to prioritize tips to be worked as well as determine if a tip should get a second human review", routing tips by thresholds, and that it helps triage immediate threats for FBI field offices; the Department classes it as not high-impact because its output is not a principal basis for decisions with legal or significant effect. MeriTalk (3 October 2024) reported FBI chief AI officer Jacqueline Maguire saying at a Center for Strategic and International Studies event on 2 October 2024 that the FBI had used AI to analyse phone calls to help triage tips at the National Threat Operations Center in West Virginia, to prioritise the workload, and to flag for review tips that appear to have been handled differently from similar tips, while a human still assesses every tip. On 11 May 2026 FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on X, as reported by the Washington Examiner, that AI is "helping us triage tips", without naming a tool. The inventory does not name the National Threat Operations Center or a vendor, and its date may not mark the first use, since the FBI described AI tip triage in 2024.
